Fabuła nawiązuje do napadu stulecia, do którego doszło 8 sierpnia 1963 roku w Anglii. 15-osobowy gang ukradł wówczas z wagonu pocztowego prawie 3 miliony funtów. Bohaterem pierwszej części jest Bruce Reynolds, mózg operacji i szef gangu. Dokonuje zuchwałego napadu na pociąg, ściągając na siebie nie tylko policję, ale również zainteresowanie mediów.
