W 1942 roku Homer Macauley ( Alex Neustaedter ) jest chłopcem, który chce być najlepszym i najszybszym rowerowym posłańcem telegraficznym małego fikcyjnego miasteczka Ithaca w Kalifornii. Jego starszy brat, Marcus ( Jack Quaid ), wraz z większością młodych mężczyzn z miasta, udał się do służby podczas II wojny światowej , pozostawiając rodziny zmartwione. Jego ojciec ( Tom Hanks ) zginął niedawno na wojnie, a chłopiec musi opiekować się owdowiałą matką ( Meg Ryan ), starszą siostrą i 4-letnim bratem.
